House Democrats asked a D.C. federal judge to expedite the release of President Trump’s tax returns. Days after indicating his support for federal background-check legislation, the President reportedly reversed course in a call with NRA officials. The NYPD fired the officer whose chokehold killed Eric Garner in 2014. The Trump administration told the Supreme Court that its attempt to end DACA was lawful.

 

TRUMP: INVESTIGATIONS & LITIGATION

House Democrats asked a D.C. federal court to grant summary judgment in their suit against the IRS, which followed the agency’s refusal to comply with subpoenas for President Trump’s tax returns (The Hill).

 

JUSTICE & SAFETY

President Trump reportedly told National Rifle Association officials that he would give the organization “cover” as it works to block mandatory background checks for firearms sales (The Atlantic).

Daniel Pantaleo, the New York City police officer whose chokehold killed Eric Garner in 2014, was fired by the NYPD (NYT).

 

REGULATION

A report commissioned by Facebook concluded that the social media giant did not intentionally suppress conservative and right-wing speech (Ars Technica).

 

IMMIGRATION

In a brief filed Monday evening in the Supreme Court, the Trump administration argued that its decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, did not violate the Administrative Procedure Act (WaPo).

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seek to leverage uncertainties in the rules for impeachment to their advantage. White House officials indicated that President Trump threatened to veto a recent spending bill if it included language requiring release of military aid to Ukraine early next year. The DHS OIG said that it found “no misconduct” by department officials in the deaths of two migrant children who died in Border Patrol custody last year. And the FISA court ordered the Justice Department to review all cases that former FBI official Kevin Clinesmith worked on.
