In a tweet last night Donald Trump made vague claims that efforts to deport undocumented immigrants will be intensified. The House Oversight and Reform Committee is requesting an interview with Christa Jones after it was revealed that she talked to a GOP strategist about a possible census citizenship question. Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has withdrawn his nomination following reports of a domestic incident.

DEMOCRACY

Different portions of testimony from former Kansas Secretary of State to the House Oversight Committee concerning the addition of the 2020 census question have been released by Republicans and Democrats as they spar over the appropriateness of recent contempt citations (The Hill).

538 reports that keeping the citizenship question on the census could result in major undercounting, and could lead to California or Texas losing seats in the House.

 

JUSTICE & SAFETY

Acting Secretary of Defense Patrick Shanahan has withdrawn his nomination following reports of a domestic incident. The new acting secretary is the Army secretary, Mark Esper (WaPo).

The House Homeland Security Committee has introduced a new, wide-sweeping agenda focused on cybersecurity (The Hill).

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seek to leverage uncertainties in the rules for impeachment to their advantage. White House officials indicated that President Trump threatened to veto a recent spending bill if it included language requiring release of military aid to Ukraine early next year. The DHS OIG said that it found “no misconduct” by department officials in the deaths of two migrant children who died in Border Patrol custody last year. And the FISA court ordered the Justice Department to review all cases that former FBI official Kevin Clinesmith worked on.
