The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Corey Lewandowski and former White House aide, Rick Dearborn, regarding President Trump’s potential obstruction of justice. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a court order requiring the Trump Administration provide hygiene supplies to children in the Rio Grande Valley detention facilities. The Israeli government announced that Representatives Omar and Tlaib are prohibited from visiting Israel during their upcoming trip after President Trump advocated for the prohibition on Twitter. 

 

TRUMP: INVESTIGATIONS AND LITIGATION

The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Corey Lewandowski and former White House aide, Rick Dearborn, regarding President Trump’s potential obstruction of justice (POLITICO; WaPo).

 

IMMIGRATION

Despite aggressive immigration enforcement, ICE has held only slightly more migrants in its family facilities under President Trump than under President Obama (crimmigration).

  • According to ICE data, most detainees are held in rural areas of the country where access to legal representation is limited, increasing the risk of deportation (NPR).
  • The Administration’s expansion of expedited removal to those apprehended anywhere throughout the country, not just the border, has stricken fear in many immigrants (ImmigrationProf).

The Administration’s public charge rule will deprive the US of the very bootstrappers the Administration claims to be seeking, asserts The Washington Post Editorial Board.

JUSTICE & SAFETY

The Israeli government announced that Representatives Omar and Tlaib are prohibited from visiting Israel during their upcoming trip after President Trump advocated for the prohibition on Twitter (WaPo; NPR; WSJ).

  • This decision will likely damage the American-Israeli relationship, contends Steve Israel for The Hill.
  • Representative Omar declared the decision an implementation of President Trump’s Muslim travel ban (The Hill).

President Trump warned China to respond humanely to the Hong Kong protestors if it wants to reach a trade deal with the US, but there is more President Trump can threaten, argues Marc Thiessen for The Washington Post.

China has threatened to retaliate if the US imposes the additional $300 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, asserting this action would violate an agreement reached earlier this year (The Hill; WSJ).

The Trump Administration requested Congress make permanent the legal authority for the National Security Agency’s Call Records Program (NYT).

 

REGULATION

President Trump’s tweet promising to investigate the accusation that Google’s work with the Chinese military was treasonous raises serious ethical, legal, and political questions, contends Scott Moore for Lawfare.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell seek to leverage uncertainties in the rules for impeachment to their advantage. White House officials indicated that President Trump threatened to veto a recent spending bill if it included language requiring release of military aid to Ukraine early next year. The DHS OIG said that it found “no misconduct” by department officials in the deaths of two migrant children who died in Border Patrol custody last year. And the FISA court ordered the Justice Department to review all cases that former FBI official Kevin Clinesmith worked on.
