President Donald Trump has asked Congress for another $8.6 billion to complete a 722-mile wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw ruled Friday that potentially thousands of migrant families who were separated at the southern border under the Trump administration could be added to an existing class-action lawsuit. The Trump administration announced that it will soon implement a ban on most transgender people in the military, despite lingering injunctions. 20 states’ attorneys general have announced a challenge to the Trump administration’s new rule in Title X, the federal family planning grant program, slated to cut funding to clinics that provide or refer patients to abortion services. President Trump claimed that “Democrats oppose Israel and Jews,” reacting to the party’s controversy over recent remarks by a Muslim congresswoman.

 

TRUMP: INVESTIGATIONS AND LITIGATION

Michael Cohen, former attorney for President Trump, filed a lawsuit against the Trump Organization for not paying legal fees that Mr. Cohen alleges he was owed as a result of his work for the company (WSJ). 

Recent court filings have revealed that a “mysterious” $125,000 payment was made to lawyers for Paul Manafort (CNBC).

 

IMMIGRATION

U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan ruled that the Department of Education can’t delay implementation of a regulation aimed at preventing certain students from being wrongly placed in special education, reports Michelle Diament at Disability Scoop.

JUSTICE & SAFETY

President Trump said that he will not agree to a pact with China to resolve a months-long trade war unless it is a “very good deal” (South Morning China Post).

President Donald Trump’s 2020 budget proposal—expected to be released on Monday—will include $100 million for a global women’s fund spearheaded by his daughter Ivanka Trump (AP).

Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivered a statement regarding the Russia investigation. Mitch McConnell says that Republicans would fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2020 even if it occurs during the presidential election. A recent decision from AG Barr may deprive asylum seekers from a key protection against prolonged imprisonment. A federal judge has agreed to put the House subpoenas for the President’s banking records on hold while he appeals a ruling refusing to block them.

The Trump administration will soon intensify its efforts to reverse Obama-era climate change regulations by attacking the science that supports it. The Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law regulating the disposal of fetal remains, effectively punting on a major abortion rights decision. The Court also declined to hear a challenge to a Pennsylvania school district’s policy of allowing students to use the restroom that best aligns with their own gender identity on a case-by-case basis.
