President Trump issued his first veto, rejecting legislation to overturn his declaration of a national emergency to fund a border wall. President Trump encouraged House Republicans to vote in favor of a resolution calling on the Justice Department to make Robert Mueller’s final report public. Paul Manafort has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme. The Trump Administration has issued orders to put into effect next month new limitations on service in the military by transgender individuals. The Trump administration is considering sending a volunteer emergency response team to assist with security and humanitarian efforts at the U.S.-Mexico border.

 

TRUMP: INVESTIGATIONS AND LITIGATION

President Trump encouraged House Republicans to vote in favor of a resolution calling on the Justice Department to make Robert Mueller’s final report public (Politico).

  • The House approved in a 420-0 vote a measure urging Attorney General William Barr to release the entirety of Mueller’s findings; the resolution was blocked by Republicans in the Senate (NY Mag).

Paul Manafort, President Trump's former campaign chairman, has been indicted by a Manhattan grand jury in connection with a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme (NBC).

Meanwhile, longtime adviser to Donald Trump Roger Stone's trial has been scheduled to begin on November 5 (The Hill).

As for Rick Gates, former Trump campaign aide, he is still cooperating with federal prosecutors in “several ongoing investigations” and isn’t ready to be sentenced yet, according to the Mueller team (Politico). 

 

IMMIGRATION

The Trump administration is considering sending a volunteer emergency response team to assist with security and humanitarian efforts at the U.S.-Mexico border, reports Ted Hesson at Politico.

A FOIA request has revealed that ICE is using driver location data from local police in order to target immigrants for deportations, details Vasudha Talla at the ACLU.

The Trump Administration plans to close all U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services offices outside of the U.S. (NYT).

Special Counsel Robert Mueller delivered a statement regarding the Russia investigation. Mitch McConnell says that Republicans would fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2020 even if it occurs during the presidential election. A recent decision from AG Barr may deprive asylum seekers from a key protection against prolonged imprisonment. A federal judge has agreed to put the House subpoenas for the President’s banking records on hold while he appeals a ruling refusing to block them.

The Trump administration will soon intensify its efforts to reverse Obama-era climate change regulations by attacking the science that supports it. The Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law regulating the disposal of fetal remains, effectively punting on a major abortion rights decision. The Court also declined to hear a challenge to a Pennsylvania school district’s policy of allowing students to use the restroom that best aligns with their own gender identity on a case-by-case basis.
