TRUMP: INVESTIGATIONS & LITIGATION

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s pattern of getting guilty pleas and cooperation throughout his investigation from those he has suspected indicates that his investigation as a whole may be ending soon, writes Devlin Barrett for the Washington Post. 

Federal prosecutors with the Manhattan United States Attorney’s Office are looking into whether President Trump’s 2017 inaugural committee misspent some its donations (WSJ).

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) purchased tens of thousands of dollars of stock in Raytheon, a defense contractor only a week after lobbying the Trump administration to increase military spending (NYT).

 

REGULATION

Republicans and Democrats have not been negotiating about ways to avoid a partial government shutdown that could happen next week (Politico).

 

CHECKS & BALANCES

The United States Senate voted 56 to 41 to withdraw American military assistance to Saudi Arabia in Yemen, going against President Trump’s defense of the nation following the killing of Jamal Khashoggi (NYT, LATimes).

The Senate took an important step when it unanimously approved a resolution that claims Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was accountable for the murder Jamal Khashoggi, writes the Washington Post Editorial Board.

Mitch McConnell says that Republicans would fill a Supreme Court vacancy in 2020 even if it occurs during the presidential election. A recent decision from AG Barr may deprive asylum seekers from a key protection against prolonged imprisonment. A federal judge has agreed to put the House subpoenas for the President’s banking records on hold while he appeals a ruling refusing to block them.

The Trump administration will soon intensify its efforts to reverse Obama-era climate change regulations by attacking the science that supports it. The Supreme Court upheld an Indiana law regulating the disposal of fetal remains, effectively punting on a major abortion rights decision. The Court also declined to hear a challenge to a Pennsylvania school district’s policy of allowing students to use the restroom that best aligns with their own gender identity on a case-by-case basis.
